Since 1998 Agnieszka Wołodźko has realized "Social
Sculpture" Program at Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art
in Gdansk.
Social Sculpture is a program aimed at citizens of Lower City - a neglected
district of Gdańsk, in a big percent inhabited by the unemployed, alcoholics
and Gypsy families, which results in a high level of crimes. It is a goal of
the program to influence culture and social transformations of the district,
drawing the inhabitants, and especially children and teenagers, to an active
participation in art, giving them opportunity of spending time in an interesting
and developing way and, what seems to be the most important, bringing them
back their positive and creative image of themselves. The program is realized
through organized at Łaźnia Centre workshops designed for chosen groups of
citizens. Scripts of the workshops are prepared by artists, Polish or international
from fields of visual art, music, theatre or film. In most of cases they are
based on some sociological questions, where participants play a role both of
a subject and an object of an artistic idea.
