Reykjavik - Akranes Project
(realized in frames of the group exhibition "Coastline" included to the program of "Reykjavik European City of Culture in the Year 2000")

The project arose from an analysis of a situation carried out on the place - in Reykjavik. An area, to which my work referred and where it was installed was the northern coastline of the city, parallel to which a walking path, a pawn and a road go with buildings behind. There is a view for a gulf from the pathway. The gulf is locked in by mountains with a small town Akranes at their feet. Because it is placed just opposite to Reykjavik, passers-by on the pathway, looking at the ocean can see white houses of Akranes on the horizon. I based my project on an supposition that even if inhabitants of Akranes knew Reykjavik, because they had to come there as to handle a lot of matters, citizens of Reykjavik didn't know Akranes. So neighbours didn't know each other.
Through my project I wanted to introduce inhabitants of Akranes in Reykjavik. This is why I planed to go there as to record my talks with them. I posed them some questions:
- Why did they decide to live in the village?
- If they were glad of staying there?
- If they were able to move to Reykjavik, would they? Etc.
Because I was asking questions in English and they were answering in Icelandic, my work concerns also a problem of understanding and misunderstanding.
The collected recordings were bases for 5 sound installations installed at the coastline. They also included also clay models of places, where the talks were carried on.
